Comm 88 Non-research Alternative for Research Participation – WINTER 2019
How Comm 88 Relates to the Real World
For EACH CREDIT/HOUR (one assignment = one credit/hour of participation):
Find a recent news story about a new study. BE CAREFUL to make sure that the date of the
news story is NO FURTHER BACK THAN JANUARY 1, 2019. I will not accept
assignments about older news stories, as I have to assume in that case that you have just returned-in someone’s assignment from a previous quarter. Be sure to copy/paste (or capture
screen shot) of the first portion of of the news story itself, with the headline and date clearly
identifiable, and include that along with your assignment.
It can be any kind of study being reported in any kind of news: “hard news” (e.g., politics, polls);
“lifestyle” features (e.g., stories about college life, parenting, etc.); business, sports, health, etc.
Write TWO, double-spaced pages (or a little less or more, as needed), in which you identify and
describe how some methods issues from this class (e.g., measurement, sampling, question
wording, correlation, etc.) relate to what is being reported about the new study. Do not just
re-tell/summarize the study being reported in the news story. Describe how the method topic(s)
from lecture/reading are related to what was described in the news story. In other words, how
does knowing about certain course concepts affect your understanding or interpretation of the
news story; how do the things that you’ve learned in this class affect how you make sense of
studies being reported in the news?
There are no right or wrong answers, and you will not be graded— However, I will be
looking to see that you put in enough effort to warrant one credit/hour of participation. I hope
that you use this assignment to help you better learn and apply the material of this course!
IMPORTANT: This assignment is designed to take one hour, and is worth one credit hour of
participation. For TWO total hours of credit, you will need to do this assignment TWICE (i.e.,
find two different news stories, and describe each one’s method issues, etc.)
IF EXTRA CREDIT is offered this quarter (listen for announcements in class or posts on
GauchoSpace), then you can do this assignment one MORE time (for a different news story) for
one more hour/credit of participation.
SUBMISSION: Under the “Research Participation Requirement” tab, you will find a link
to “Submit Non-research Alternative Assignments here!” Upload your
assignment(s) an attachment in .pdf format only. You may attach up to three
maximum. Please label each assignment as #1, #2, etc., if you are submitting
more than one.
DUE DATE: You may submit assignments anytime from now on, but NO LATER than
FRIDAY, MARCH 15 by 5pm (last day of instruction).
